Eligibility Criteria
There are important criteria that a candidate must fulfil to be eligible for the SSC Stenographer 2026. The parameters are given below:
Educational Qualification (as on 01/08/2026)
A candidate must have at least a 12th grade diploma from an accredited board or university. After passing the SSC Stenographer 2026 Exam, he or she must be able to provide the necessary documentation when asked for confirmation.
Age Limit (as on 01/08/2026)
SSC Stenographer Grade C: To be eligible for the SSC Stenographer 2026 Grade C Exam, a candidate must be between the ages of 18 and 30. Candidates may apply if they were born between August 2, 1996, and August 1, 2008.
SSC Stenographer Grade D: To be eligible for the SSC Stenographer 2026 Grade D Exam, a candidate must be between the ages of 18 and 27. Candidates may apply if they were born between August 2, 1999, and August 1, 2008.

Nationality
A candidate must be either:
(a) a citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (Formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam to permanently settle in India.
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour the Government of India has issued a certificate of eligibility.
A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary may be admitted to the examination, but the offer of appointment will be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him by the Government of India.
Application Fee
The SSC Stenographer 2026 application fee is Rs. 100 (for General and OBC). The SSC Stenographer 2026 application fee will not be required for female candidates or those who fall under the SC/ST/PWD/Ex-servicemen category.

Important Points:
a) Question paper will be of Objective Type Multiple Choice. Questions will be set in Hindi and English except for Part III.
b) SSC has introduced sectional timings of 30 minutes for Part 1 and 2, 60 minutes for Part 3.
c) There will be a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. Candidates are, therefore, advised to keep this in mind while answering the question.
Minimum Qualifying Marks
The minimum percentage of marks for qualifying in the SSC Stenographer Computer-Based Examination will be as follows:
- Unreserved Category: 30%
- OBC/EWS: 25%
- All Other Categories: 20%
Skill Test in Stenography
Candidates will be invited to the skill test if they receive the qualifying exam scores as specified by the Commission. Additionally, the commission has the authority to set qualifying scores for each section of the test. The Commission will set the qualifying requirements for the various categories of candidates in the qualifying skill test.
The candidates must show up for the stenography skill test. For the position of Stenographer Grade "C," candidates will be required to dictate in English or Hindi for ten minutes at a speed of 100 words per minute (w.p.m.) and for the position of Stenographer Grade "D," 80 w.p.m. A computer will be required to transcribe the information. Important Points:
- Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment, failing which their probation may not be cleared by the appointing departments. Candidates have to work as English/ Hindi stenographers as per the functional requirement of the User Office, irrespective of the medium of the Skill Test of the candidate during the examination.
- The skill test will be held at the Commission’s Regional/Sub-Regional Offices or at other Centres (s) as may be decided by the Commission.
- Detailed instructions regarding the Skill Test will be sent by the concerned Regional/Sub-Regional Offices of the Commission to the candidates called for the Skill Test.

Salary
For the positions of Stenographer Grade "C" (Group "B," Non-Gazetted) and Stenographer Grade "D" (Group "C"), all candidates who have been temporarily appointed will receive a competitive monthly pay. In addition to the base pay, there will be a number of deductions (like income tax and provident fund) and allowances (like house rent allowance and dearness allowance).
